Job Announcement – Bilingual Aquatic Invasive Species Educator

Position Description: The Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board (MPRB) is seeking an individual to work as a bilingual Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Educator. This educator will work in multiple locations throughout Minneapolis including shoreline fishing sites, neighborhood events, and community celebrations. The Aquatic Invasive Species Educator will:

  1. Provide interactive aquatic invasive species education to diverse groups of patrons at Minneapolis Parks
  2. Participate in community and neighborhood events
  3. Assist in the development of new aquatic invasive species education materials
  4. Help survey anglers at local water bodies to understand demographics
  5. Support educational outreach efforts to local businesses
  6. Track participation and help evaluate program effectiveness

Hours: Will work on both weekdays and weekends, primarily in the afternoons and evenings. Requires availability for four weekend days/evenings per month

The position will start in May and last through early-September. Average of approximately 10 hours per week in May and 20 hours per week in June through early-September. 
Compensation: $14.00 hourly. 
Requirements/Qualifications:

  • Must be conversationally fluent in either Spanish, Somali, or Hmong
  • Outgoing personality; able to draw in participants
  • Strong public speaking skills
  • Experience working with diverse audiences in a public setting
  • Training in environmental education and/or lake ecology
  • Previous experience tabling or in community outreach
  • Ability to work flexible schedule
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and a reliable car (mileage reimbursement provided) 
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience fishing and knowledge of fishing terminology
  • Knowledge of aquatic invasive species prevention and identification
  • Demonstrated success teaching in event settings
