THE POSITION

The Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) is seeking a Public Information Officer to develop and facilitate all external messaging for the agency. HCSO is the largest Sheriff’s Office in Minnesota with over 800 employees.  It is headquartered in downtown Minneapolis with division and unit facilities throughout Hennepin County.  The HCSO is dedicated to public safety and service as guardians of the community through leadership, integrity and strong partnerships.

This individual will serve as the primary contact for media outlets and is responsible for providing accurate and timely information to both members of the media and the public.  This position reports to the Communications Director.

This is a limited duration (temporary), benefit earning position lasting up to two years.

The primary duties and responsibilities of this position include:

•Plan, develop and direct the Sheriff Office’s (SO) media relations including responding to critical incidents.

•Develop a comprehensive plan to integrate all aspects of the Sheriff’s Office communications including the preparation of all press releases, media advisories, newsletters, speeches, safety messages and managing social media accounts.

•Develop a comprehensive program for building and maintaining effective relationships between the SO, media and the community.

•Serve as community liaison and public speaker, including representing the Sheriff at community meetings and in committees within and outside Hennepin County.

•Assist with planning and coordinating all aspects of SO special events, including open houses, annual recognition events, memorials and other major events.

•Develop and manage the SO’s website and e-mail interaction with law enforcement, the media, and community related to crime activity.

•Pitch story ideas to the media that are timely and relevant.

•Coordinate appropriate responses to all media requests.

Best Qualified Candidates will be 18 years or older and have:

•Bachelor’s degree or higher in public affairs, public relations, journalism, communications or a closely-related field and four or more full-time equivalent years of experience in news media or public relations. Experience in news media or public relations may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis.

•A valid driver’s license.

•Previous experience as a Public Information Officer for a public safety agency.

•At least two years professional experience that required a major emphasis on writing.

•Experience managing content on social media sites

•Ability to:

◦Work effectively under deadline pressures.

◦Convene and facilitate news conferences.

◦Be on call 24/7 to respond to major incidents, answer news media calls and be available to reporters needing assistance.

•Ability and willingness to travel to any location in Hennepin County on very short notice at any time on any day.

Applicants must have no felony convictions and must successfully complete an extensive background investigation that includes criminal, employment and financial checks during the six-month probationary period.
